The BagUps Story: How One Founder Solved an Everyday Problem

The Story Behind BagUps

Company Story

There is an Air Force officer standing in a missile squadron in the middle of Missouri. He wanted to fly fighter jets.  Instead, a depth-perception test changed the course of his life.

After graduating from The Citadel, Jack Licata entered the United States Air Force and was assigned to the nation's nuclear missile program. While serving, he earned his MBA and learned to think about systems, efficiency, and operational excellence.

One afternoon, after another long day of work, he was assigned a task most people never think twice about.

Changing the garbage.

The process seemed simple, but Jack couldn't stop thinking about how inefficient it was. Workers removed a full trash bag, walked to a storage area, found a replacement bag, returned to the trash can, and then completed the task. In restaurants, offices, schools, hospitals, and commercial facilities, the same unnecessary process was happening thousands of times every day.

To most people, it was a minor inconvenience.

To Jack, it was a problem worth solving.

That simple observation would remain with him long after he left military service.

Years later, it would become BagUps.

Product Development Journey

After leaving the Air Force, Jack began developing solutions to the problem he had identified years earlier.

Drawing on his military experience, MBA training, and entrepreneurial background, he started building prototypes and testing different approaches. The goal was simple: keep replacement trash bags directly inside the trash can so users never had to leave the container unattended while searching for a new liner.

The idea sounded obvious. Making it work was not.

Jack spent years refining designs, testing concepts, and working with manufacturers. Early versions were distributed to restaurant managers, commercial facilities, and business owners who changed trash bags every day.

The response was immediate.

Users consistently reported that once they started using the system, they didn't want to return to traditional trash bag storage methods.

One friend became frustrated when his sample ran out because there was no place to buy another one.

That reaction confirmed what years of observation had suggested: the problem was real, and the solution created genuine value.

Then, BagUps entered commercial production.

Over the following years, the product continued to evolve through customer feedback, commercial testing, retail expansion, a national appearance on QVC, and eventually a direct-to-consumer business model.

The company continues to refine and improve the product.

Veteran Background and People With Disabilities

Jack Licata's military service taught him how to solve problems.

His personal life taught him why those solutions should matter.

While building his career, Jack's fiancée was involved in a devastating automobile accident. Before airbags became standard, what might have been a survivable crash left her with severe brain injuries and permanent disabilities.

For nearly a decade, Jack worked alongside hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, and long-term care providers while helping navigate her treatment and recovery.

Eventually, he helped establish a group home for individuals living with traumatic brain injuries, which he later donated to the Long Island Head Injury Association.

The experience transformed his perspective.

He witnessed firsthand how difficult it could be for individuals with disabilities to find meaningful employment despite their desire to contribute and build independent lives.

He also understood the challenges many veterans face when transitioning back into civilian careers.

When BagUps began to grow, Jack made a commitment.

If the company succeeded, it would create opportunities for people who were often overlooked.

Today, BagUps works with organizations that employ individuals with disabilities while supporting veteran employment initiatives.

These commitments are not marketing campaigns. They are a reflection of the experiences that shaped the founder's life.
